Eastern Beach was first developed from 1923, when steep cliffs were flattened, a sea wall added and a chalet built. This building is now a kiosk and restaurant. Later, an enclosed shark-proof pool was added, opening in 1939.
Max Dupain, a well-known Australian photographer, took an iconic image of Eastern Beach in the 1940s. The trees have grown, the image is now in colour, but Eastern Beach continues to be popular with locals and tourists. Click on the image below to see the image transition.
