Over 600 ships use the port of Geelong each year. A huge expansion is expected in the next ten years.
While the main dock area used to be at Cunningham and Yarra Street Piers, near the city, port operations have now moved to the north with only the occasional cruise ship docking at Cunningham pier. Following a fire in 1988, Yarra Street Pier was demolished. However, there is still a fishing fleet in the small harbour between Yarra Street and Geelong Yacht Club. The Geelong Yacht Club holds an annual regatta each January.

The main port area has 4 major docking sites, the Grain Pier just north of St Helen’s Park, Corio Quay, Lascelles Wharf and the Refinery Pier furthest north.
